Stage 2: Totale Voetbal

Netherlands - Stage 2 Totale Voetbal

Totale Voetbal (Total Football)  about individual ball control skills

Being comfortable with a ball on both feet

Because tactics are not yet relevant in this player development phase

Method:

  • Players are discouraged from favouring their stronger foot when training.

  • The Totale Voetbal approach requires a player to be comfortable controlling and striking the ball with either foot

  • Training matches do not use set pieces when the ball goes out of play, instead the ball is bounced straight back in.

  • This encourages players to remain alert even during breaks in play.

  • Small sided games e.g. 4v4 or 5v2 (always a maximum of 8 players on the field).

  • Players are expected to defend and attack with equal proficiency and are free to move out of position to facilitate this.

  • Short, simple passes that enable a team to retain possession are rewarded.

Outcomes from the Totale Voetbal approach:

  • Players feel success and confident

  • Take an active part in the game

  • Learn to play as a team

  • Develop both feet

  • Be able to take part regardless of ability

  • Smaller players also thrive
