Totale Voetbal (Total Football) about individual ball control skills
Being comfortable with a ball on both feet
Because tactics are not yet relevant in this player development phase
Players are discouraged from favouring their stronger foot when training.
The Totale Voetbal approach requires a player to be comfortable controlling and striking the ball with either foot
Training matches do not use set pieces when the ball goes out of play, instead the ball is bounced straight back in.
This encourages players to remain alert even during breaks in play.
Small sided games e.g. 4v4 or 5v2 (always a maximum of 8 players on the field).
Players are expected to defend and attack with equal proficiency and are free to move out of position to facilitate this.
Short, simple passes that enable a team to retain possession are rewarded.
